The Sleeping Giant Reading Series brings writers and book lovers together on the third Thursday of the month. In the long shadow of Hamden’s Sleeping Giant, writers of every kind gather to hear professional readings, raise a glass, network, and support one another’s work. All are welcome, whether you’re a scribbler who hasn’t yet dared to call yourself a “writer” or an experienced published author.
This month’s featured writers are Peter Trachtenberg and Rebecca Brock.
Join us for first-hour readings by our featured guest writers, including some of the great voices of our day, followed by Writers’ Happy Hour, a chance to meet fellow writers, ask questions, lend your support, and have fun together!
In his new book, The Twilight of Bohemia: Westbeth and The Last Artists in New York, Peter Trachtenberg "has artfully, tenderly, and wisely recreated New York City’s legendary Westbeth artists’ community,” according to Mary Gabriel. His earlier books include 7 Tattoos, The Book of Calamities: Five Questions About Suffering and Its Meaning, and Another Insane Devotion, a 2012 New York Times Editors’ Choice. He has won Whiting and Guggenheim fellowships and has taught at the University of Pittsburgh and in the MFA program at Bennington College. He lives in the Hudson Valley.
A MacDowell Fellow and recipient of a Virginia Commission for the Arts Fellowship, Rebecca Brock is the author of the poetry collections The Way the Land Breaks and Each Bearing Out. She has won the Women's Poetry Contest at Kelsay Books, the Editor's Choice Award at Sheila-Na-Gig, and the Muriel Craft Bailey Memorial Poetry Contest, judged by Ellen Bass. Her work has appeared in The Threepenny Review, THRUSH, SWWIM, West Trestle, and elsewhere and has been nominated for Best of the Net and Pushcart Prizes. She holds an MFA from the Bennington Writing Seminars and lives in Virginia where she has been a flight attendant for most of her adult life and is still surprised by this fact.
