The Sleeping Giant Reading Series brings writers and book lovers together. In the long shadow of Hamden’s Sleeping Giant, writers of every kind gather to hear professional readings, raise a glass, network, and support one another’s work. All are welcome, whether you’re a scribbler who hasn’t yet dared to call yourself a “writer” or an experienced published author.
This month’s featured writers are Tim Parrish and April Bernard.
Tim Parrish is the author of Red Stick Men (stories), Fear and What Follows: The Violent Education of a Christian Racist (memoir), and The Jumper (a novel). He is a professor of English at Southern Connecticut State University and is one of the founders of the only full-residence MFA in Creative Writing in Connecticut. He grew up in Baton Rouge (Red Stick), Louisiana.
Writing about The World Behind the World, April Bernard’s sixth book of poems, Brian McKenna said, “Few contemporary poets are so articulate about our primitive urges or possess the daring to leap from the top rung of their intellect’s ladder.” April is also the author of two novels (both about gutsy women), and many essays and reviews, often in the New York Review of Books. Passionate about writing and literature, she taught for many years at Bennington College and is now a professor at Skidmore College.
Join us for first-hour readings by guest writers, including some of the great voices of our day, followed by Writers’ Happy Hour, a chance to meet fellow writers, ask questions, lend your support, and have fun together!
Curated by local writers Alice Mattison, Sandi Shelton (aka Maddie Dawson), Kathy Czepiel, and Heather Jessen, the Sleeping Giant Reading Series happens every third Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Best Video Film and Cultural Center in Hamden, Connecticut. The Sleeping Giant Reading Series is free to attend. Donations at the door for our guest readers are always appreciated.
