Daphne Parker Powell plays Best Video Film & Cultural Center on Fri., Mar. 8. The show starts at 7 PM and singer-songwriter Sarah Dunn shares the bill. The cover is $10. No Depression described Daphne as “the voice of futuristic folk-rock/alternative-roots music... exploring the outer reaches of nostalgic melody... ” Her singular Americana mélange includes a broad array of contemporary and classic inspirations that spans folk, country, vocal jazz, indie rock, and cinematic pop. Her words are pulled from an expansive well of literature and lyrical influences, from laissez-faire poets, satirists, and the Beats, to Feminists, modern philosophers and friends. Praise for Daphne's Albums has streamed in from myriad sources. Peter Lindblad of Elmore Magazine wrote, "(With) luxuriously furnished dark, undulating folk and blues elegance, (Daphne) explores matters of the heart with refreshing candor and wry humor, as a range of personal experiences and raw emotions." American Songwriter declared, "Her songs slink their way through the worlds of pop, R&B, and avant-garde, often with edifying results." And Innocent Words Magazine rhapsodized, "Equally retro and modern and thoroughly out of this world, (the) clever accompaniment lifts Daphne's loose vocal stylings and cheeky tin pan alley songwriting to theatrical settings. If the SyFy channel ever decides to bring back Firefly, Joss Whedon may have found his new house band in Daphne." Sarah Dunn is a singer-songwriter who released their full length album, Too Much, in December, 2023. Their style has been described "Acoustic singer-songwriter, but, also kind of emo?" They write in a vulnerable, specific, and deeply personal lyrical voice. A multi-instrumentalist, Sarah also plays bass in the femme punk band Corpse Flower, screams in a goth-electronic trio Things in the Dark, and plays fiddle in the traditional Irish music group, The Alehounds. Sarah was raised in Georgia, and has made Hamden their home as a single parent with their two children, chickens, and cats.
